Understanding Sanfilippo Syndrome

Many people have never even heard of Sanfilippo Syndrome. This rare childhood disease is caused by a defect in a single gene, it is a metabolic disorder which renders the body unable to break down chains of sugar molecules, which leads to dangerous build up within cells. This leads to the degeneration of the central nervous system.

Sanfilippo can be broken down into three stages. In the first stage, the child will display a confusing range of physical symptoms, alongside behavioral issues such as hyperactivity and aggression.

In the second stage the child will throw tantrums and exhibit dangerous and difficult behavior. Over time, speech loss occurs and communication skills decline along with mental regression and loss of motor skills.

In the final stage, the child will lose the ability to walk, talk and eat as their body shuts down. Death may occur as early as the age of three. Occasionally a child may live to adulthood with constant medical care, but it is rare.

It isn’t easy to understand the medical terms and details of Sanfilippo Syndrome, but it is not hard to understand that this disease is a burden that no family should have to bear alone.
